Japan
Japan was never really on my list – until one of my students brought it up in August 2024. The exchange rate was great, and I didn’t need a visa. Since I was going to be in Vietnam in January anyway, I decided to spend February in Japan.
I honestly can’t think of anything I didn’t like. The way people communicate, the sound of the language – it all makes me happy. And some of my conversations with locals were pure magic. Still, I’m someone who can’t live without olive oil, bread, butter and cheese, so I won’t be moving there. But when it comes to art, culture and order, Japan is one of my favourite countries in the world.
Highlights
Don’t miss out
Tokyo
Tokyo is huge, yet it never feels chaotic. Between the high-rises, you suddenly find a quiet shrine or a park where time seems to slow down. The best way to explore it is one neighbourhood at a time – on foot and by train. There are countless vintage shops, and the flea markets are really good. Still, don’t buy too much here – other cities often have cheaper options.
Meiji Jingu & Meiji Jingu Gyoen
The shrine and its garden, Meiji Jingu Gyoen, share one large site. The garden has a small entry fee – it’s worth it. I went on a rainy day, and that made it feel magical. Don’t miss the South Pond (Minami-ike). It’s probably at its best in spring and autumn – and a perfect spot for birdwatching.
I’m not a big fan of Asian food, but this vegan restaurant really won me over.
